Episode 22 - My Whole Life Long

Hi everyone,

My Whole Life Long is a tribute to anyone whose relationship has survived long distance and the pain of being apart for those stretches. In our case, my wife Rebecca and I lived through a two year period living apart when I was starting the band in Durham and she was a law clerk at the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee. I wrote My Whole Life Long during that time and it ended up being the soundtrack to both my proposal to Becca during the second year of her clerkship and the first dance at our wedding a year later.

That stint apart turned out to be good training for the band’s marathon travel schedule. I do think our love has grown stronger as a result of occasional distance and that each instance of separation is a chance to remember what a gift it is to be with the one you love.

I’ve been deeply touched to see the other relationships that this song has resonated into over the years and I hope you enjoy a stripped down take from yours truly.

Love (from afar 😉),

Ian

My Whole Life Long

I want to love you in the daylight

With the world all alive around us

Cause it's too hard through a phone line

To hold you the way I want to

So don't leave me

Say you need me

Have a little faith in what we've made

Just think about how strong our love has grown

Think about how good these seeds we've sown

I will love you, I will love you

My whole life long

And I want to love you in the darkness

With the night rolling in like thunder

Cause it's too easy, baby, when you've spent so many nights alone

To forget how you pull me under

So don't leave me

Say you need me

Have a little faith in what we've made

Just think about how strong our love has grown

Think about how good these seeds we've sown

I will love you, I will love you

My whole life long

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh oh oh

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Oh yeah, oh oh, my baby

Just think about how strong our love has grown

Just think about how good these seeds we've sown

I will love you, I will love you
