Episode 11 - Love Me Strong

Well, this one was a blast.

I got to musically reunite with one of my closest friends and a longtime collaborator of Delta Rae’s, the guitar/cello/bass phenom, James Goldberg. We met James in Durham just as the band was starting and he played bass and cello in some of our earliest gigs and recordings, including the Delta Rae EP we released in 2010. He’s gone on to become an amazing dad, a beloved high school math teacher, my very patient golf mentor, and a burgeoning songwriter in his own right!

We sat down to play a song that’s been haunting Delta Rae’s universe since 2015 — a Fleetwood Mac inspired slow burn called Love Me Strong. Like Chasing Twisters and Outlaws, I started writing Love Me Strong during a particularly heavy stretch of touring, thinking about the strains that life on the road can put on relationships and commitments at home. The song poured out as a demand from one partner to another to stay, to retain the faith in love and the strength of their bond even when it was challenged, and to come home to the one that has supported and loved them from the beginning.

I love the way Delta Rae’s voices wrapped around this song in the early rehearsals and, just as importantly, the mysterious atmosphere Mike, Grant, and Eric brought to the instrumentation — a vibe James picked up on and crushed within ten minutes of hearing the song.

I’m thrilled with how this one came together and to have had the chance to make music with James again.

I hope you all enjoy Love Me Strong.

Love,

Ian
