Episode 3 - I Don’t Know
Hi friends,
For the third installment of Demos With Ian, I want to share a song that captures some of the uncertainty I’ve felt over the last decade — the highs and lows of navigating a career in music with my closest friends and family, watching the American political and economic system lurch between progress and chaos, building a family and raising a child with values that will serve him and the world, and feeling unable to project the confidence that I know where everything is going amidst these shifting tides.
I used to think (or at least behave like) intelligence meant having an answer to every question, something to offer on any subject, but I long ago learned that the wisest people in my life continually educate themselves and value curiosity, but are willing to own when they don’t know something — and to listen to those who might know better. That’s something I’m trying to get better at.
This song grapples with the discomfort and pain that comes from admitting you’re unsure, even when what you want most is to reassure the people you love most.
This is I Don’t Know.
Love,
Ian
P.S. Please forgive my wandering eye contact in this episode. I’d like to explain, but, eh… I don’t know. 🤷🏼♂️
