Episode 4 - Fall In Love With Angels
Hello!
Welcome to song four from behind the door (behold the poetry!).
This week’s episode of Demos With Ian features the first song that is entirely new and written with the intent of being debuted Behind the Door. When the pandemic struck, I finally had enough time to revisit old demos that I’d recorded going all the way back to 2011(!) and ran across one entitled I Still Love You. I really liked the melodies and decided to try to reanimate them into something that felt a little more finished.
As I brought the song to guitar and began singing it again, I felt like the structure lacked a real chorus and so I set out to find something that brought the emotion of the demo to a more full realization. When I stumbled on the idea of “why does God let fools fall in love with angels,” I felt like I’d captured something more original than the lyrics in the demo were achieving and that brought conclusion to a lot of the idea that I was hovering around.
As I explain in the video, the song began to strike at something important to me about my relationship with my wife, Rebecca: the ways in which I’ve grown and wanted to be better as a result of loving her and feeling confronted with my shortcomings in a relationship and marriage that is honest, safe, and mutually giving. And spans 15 years, so… lots of growth!
I hope you all enjoy witnessing me trying to be better and better this rough demo!
Love,
Ian
