Episode 15 - Louder Than Cannons
BOOM!!! LOUDER Than Cannons!
This is a song Eric and I started writing seven years ago inspired by (and with the hopes of being included in the sound track to…) The Hunger Games. While we didn't finish in time to pitch the song and I think The Lumineers did a great contribution with The Hanging Tree, I’m very grateful to have had the initial visit from the Mockingjay muse as, revisiting this song, I think it rocks!
As you may recall, in The Hunger Games canon (see what I did there), the firing of a cannon represents the death of a tribute. The idea of the song, which I think of as following in the tradition of Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Mis, was that the rebellion of the districts against the capital was the raising of their collective voice and anger above the power and intimidation of the cannon fire.
I worked with imagery directly from the books and then inserted some of my favorite mythological themes, specifically the sacrifice of a martyred hero to be remembered alongside the gods.
I feel very excited about this one and you can see why I needed Eric’s beautiful piano work to bring it to life.
Sadly, there’s part of it that seems relative to the moment we’re living through. I hope we can raise our voices and demand change before the stakes get any higher.
Love,
Ian
