Episode 14 - Old Spice
Hi friends,
I’m happy to welcome back a man who needs endless introductions… the one, the only ERIC HOLLJES.
Eric and I started writing Old Spice about four years ago. It has been called “f*cking great!!!!!!!” by our former manager and, reportedly, “the worst song ever written” by our formal label head. So, you know, controversial.
I happen to like it. It harkens back to high school when my long-time crush told me the scent of Old Spice deodorant was her jam. That stuck with me and, so, when I thought about a song devoted to young love, I thought of Old Spice and the sights, the scents, the sounds, and feelings going through a person’s mind during their first kiss.
Going back to this song after a while, I like that the verses are about memory, perseverance, and growing up, but that those visceral feelings around our first crushes linger and inform our lifetime loves.
Still feels true.
Hope you all enjoy Old Spice.
Love,
Ian
