Episode 13 - Still In Love
Hi friends,
Today I managed to land a very special guest. He’s an up-and-coming singer-songwriter and while many of you may not yet be familiar with him, I think he shows a lot of promise. His name is ERIC HOLLJES.
This was a lot of fun to record! Eric and I started writing music together over twenty years ago around this exact piano, each of us occupying the very positions we assume in this video. It feels like home.
Still In Love came to life in 2016 when the band was writing for A Long And Happy Life. I had heard a radio interview discussing Otis Redding’s biography and, during the interview, they featured his very first single, These Arms of Mine. The song really hit me and I listened to it obsessively in the weeks that followed.
It was top of mind when the verse to Still In Love came to me and one day when Eric and I were just hanging out, I had a bolt-of-lightning epiphany about the chorus. I didn’t want to lose it, so I interrupted the conversation and begged Eric to jump on the piano. Suddenly Baby, baby, baby when your heart is lonesome… just started pouring out. I loved what an abrupt confrontation it was from the legato lament of the verse.
I love Otis Redding’s voice and delivery. The desperation, the simplicity, the beauty. And I long to sing like that. To Eric’s credit, he suggested we lower the key (and he was probably right), but I wanted to grit and sadness to come through.
I hope you all enjoy and… I’m gonna see if I can get our special guest to join us for a few more shows.
Love,
Ian
